Back To School artificial colors
If you ask owner or baker of a small local bakery how many ingredients are in their cookies they will name something like 5 or 6 or maybe 7. According to the Wikipedia cookies contain fat, flour, eggs and sugar. Add some salt, chocolate chips, almonds or raisins and you will get all kind of nutrients your body needs to do any physical and mental work.
How do you like 42 ingredients including 11 artificial colors and an artificial flavor? Look at the Lofthouse’s Back To School cookies. Is this stuff designed for our kids? (Read the Feingold Association’s PDF file: Behavior, Learning and Health: The Dietary Connection). Even flour was first stripped of the nutrients before it was added in the form of enriched bleached wheat flour (watch video Enriched Wheat Flour) to last longer on the shelf.
DyeDiet Doesn’t Buy It!
With every cookie containing 4 mg of Red 40 and smaller amounts of the other food colorants (see CSPI document Food Dyes: A Rainbow of Risks) you get high risk of DDFI = 121/46 ~ 2.6 and low nutritional value of DDNF = 46/160 ~ 0.3. Why to pay some $3 for the chemically enriched cookies if you can buy oatmeal cookies for $2 in the same store? Here is even better idea: Why don’t we support local bakeries like this one, Prairie Thunder Baking Company, by buying their healthy baked goods? Even if we have to pay more than we pay for the Lofthouse’s stuff we can be quite sure that we eat nutrients, not the additives. Make your informed healthy food choice!
