America’s Nutritional Choices
I see healthy and unhealthy foods in a little bit different way from what the mainstream media promote as “good” and reject as “bad” food. For decades high calorie content has been considered as a “bad” factor. But energy supply is one of the major functions of food that keeps us alive. So in my view, it is not high calorie food to blame for poor health but the consumer who tend to continuously overeat. Therefore it doesn’t really matter how much fat or sugar or the both are in the food if we are well informed of the content and are able to stop after a moderate amount was eaten. After all, both sugars and fats are macronutrients that are absolutely necessary in our diet. What makes food really unhealthy are genetic or chemical modifications (food additives). Many chemical food additives are completely foreign to the human biochemistry so that, at a very least, our body cannot make any use of them and many are disruptive to our natural metabolism. Food dyes, preservatives, flavors, artificial sugar substitutes are among most known troublemakers. Foreign chemical food additives increase health risks and diminish nutritional value of the food.
“Since the introduction of these ingredients and chemicals into our food supply, we’ve had a 300 percent increase in asthma, a 400 percent increase in ADHD and between a 1,500 and 6,000 percent increase in autism,” she said. “There’s much debate about what could be causing these increases, but I think we can’t ignore these numbers” (Los Angeles Times, January 10, 2011).
In the chart below DyeDiet nutritional factors (DDNF) of 67 snacks and beverages popular in the USA are given. All the items have been reviewed earlier so you can do search for a product by the name to see the relevant article.

Note that zero and diet versions of beverages are nutritionally poorer than their originals because of the sugar substitutes. Also orange flavored beverages are often of lower nutritional values and higher risks because of the addition of controversial brominated vegetable oil. The higher DDNF value, the healthier is food if eaten in moderation. Everything with DDNF below 0.9 (as for SoBe Punch) is considered unhealthy and “bad” and products with the values below 0.3 are unacceptable. The DyeDiet recommendation would be to reject anything with DDNF lower than 0.9.
Have a Healthy Merry Christmas!
