Sparkling Ice: What zero calories come with
Sparkling Ice Kiwi Strawberry is another zero calories drink sweetened with sucralose that you may think is good for weight loss. But before you decide, read about side-effects of sucralose in this Weight Loss article. How you do like this: “Sucralose has been implicated as a possible migraine trigger, for example. Self-reported adverse reactions to Splenda or sucralose collected by the Sucralose Toxicity Information Center include skin rashes/flushing, panic-like agitation, dizziness and numbness, diarrhea, swelling, muscle aches, headaches, intestinal cramping, bladder issues, and stomach pain.”
DyeDiet Doesn’t Buy It!
The diagram looks like a warning sign: Too many red segments. A bottle of Sparkling Ice Kiwi Strawberry will put you at chemical risk of DDFI = 30/17 ~ 1.8 and will give you almost no nutritional value: DDNF = 17/43 ~ 0.4.
My spectrophotometer was not strong enough to detect the tiny amounts of Yellow 5 and Blue 1 artificial colors, a combination of which gives the beverage its light-green look implying presence of kiwifruit. This is good news because the smaller amount of the artificial dyes, the less are chances that it will develop hives or asthma in sensitive people. For this reason Kiwi Strawberry is a little less risky than Sparkling Ice Black Raspberry. Bad news is that although kiwi juice concentrate is listed among the ingredients, its amount is perhaps close to nothing that is just enough to claim presence of the fruit. The other ingredients include:
- Chlorinated sugar (sucralose). Read article Propel Zero: Sucralose is not a solution for more detail. See also what The Potential Dangers of Sucralose (Splenda) are. Sucralose is a synthetic chemical that was originally cooked up in a laboratory from sugar (sucrose). In the five-step patented process of making sucralose, three oxygen atoms are substituted by three chlorine atoms in sugar molecule. Between 2000 and 2004, the percentage of US households using Splenda products jumped from 3 to 20 percent. In a one year period, Splenda sales topped $177 million compared with $62 million spent on aspartame-based Equal and $52 million on saccharin-based Sweet ‘N Low. “Low–sugar” is the successor to the “low–carb” craze, even though they are essentially the same thing. So be ready for more reports on adverse health reactions to Splenda (sucralose). Also see why “Splenda Essentials” is Target of Lawsuit
- Potassium benzoate
- Vitamins B group. This is another example of how a good thing (vitamin) can be easily converted to evil by aggressive marketing and its acceptance by ignorant public. Vitamins B are now chasing you in so many drinks so you better be ready for possible vitamin poisoning or milder adverse effects. See the relevant articles: Vitamin E Pills May Raise, Not Lower, Prostate Cancer Risk and New study sees little need for vitamins, cites risks.

Bottom line. Long-term health effects of consuming sucralose (chlorinated sugar) are unknown. By drinking or eating sucralose (Splenda) sweetened products you are agreeing to conduct life-time toxicology experiment on yourself and/or on your children. I recently started buying and drinking these products. I had started to notice I’d wake up with a SCREAMING headache the morning after drinking one. I usually don’t eat/drink “diet” foods and prefer natural sugars over chemical sugars. I definitely think these drinks are giving me headaches and I’m done with them.
Yes, thank you for your comment! If you wish we can publish your story in more detail to help other readers. Just let me know.
I read the label and it is so misleading. I am figuring it cannot be good for you as it tastes so good and the labels “touts” to be good for you. i only dirnk maybe one a week and i have sips of it at a time. i try to stay away from any soda. BUT now that i know for sure splenda is in it, i willstay away from them. i was on Visalus shakes for 3 months and lost 15 pounds but at the end of 3 months i had such headaches and migraines i could not function. So i am off the shakes. Now i will be off of sparkling ice also. thank you for your website. i do not know what your organization does, but visalus also needs to be investigated upon. millions of people losing weight BUT getting headaches and not realizing it is the shakes. i posted on their site and they immediately took off my responses on facebook and deleted my name on their list. they are afraid of losing customers.!! thank you for your time! Jan
Jan, thanks a lot for sharing your story and for the encouragement! Well, your story is yet another demonstration how vicious profit-driven economy is in its nature: They will keep lying to you and even killing you slowly for profit. My website is non-profit, I simply tell the consumers what I know as a professional chemist. Informed consumers are less likely to be tricked and duped. And thanks again, I will look at Visalus!
Please look in to here http://www.dyediet.com/your-story/ for more info on Visalus. Yes, it does contain sucralose and a bunch of processed crap.
I started drinking these trying to give up sodas, but soon noticed a pain and cramping in my stomach. I can’t really read the ingredient list so thanks for the info
I drank one during a college class and had to leave early cause of horrid stomach pain and diarrhea. Glad I googled it and found your website!
Good to know that we can help!
I’ve been drinking these for about a month now at school. They Taste great and don’t give me any problems. I don’t see how everyone else had them and had problems
Well, that’s how acute intoxication is different from chronic intoxication. Wait for longer and you will get your symptoms of chronic intoxication. Then you will see better what it did to you decide.
I have been drinking at least one of these a day for about a year. I have never experienced stomach pain, headaches, diarrhea, or any other symptoms. I understand im only one person but i hope your aware that almost every other soda and soft drink contains far more harmful ingredients than this.
I drink 1-2 of these a day to help keep my soda habit at bay, been doing so for close to a year. I haven’t experienced headaches, stomach aches or anything else. Ive had blood work done and had 2 physicals the past year for work and I have been given clean bills of health each time.
I have never had a taste for plain water and don’t care for the pulp or hassle that comes with adding fruits to it. Certainly not debating that it is comparable/alternative to water. But this in comparison to Sodas, Fruit Juices, and Sports Drinks – it’s got to be a healthier alternative; a lesser of the evils if you will.
Thank you for the comment!
I just started drinking these about a couple of weeks and Im not feeling so hot. Im having horrible stomach pains, gas, burping foul smell and diarrhea and panic type feeling anxiety almost and headaches. Im done with these drinks!!!! I thought these would be a great supplement for pop. And to top it off Im nursing and my daughter has been gassy and throwing up her milk. Which is from what I put in my body which is these damn drinks!!! I can’t wait to feel better.
Thank you for sharing!
Lol there’s articles against everything. Look people I stopped drinking soda and started drinking like 5 sparkling ice a day, and lost about 20 pounds. Dont let others scare you out of trying a beverage that has killed no one. You’ll be fine
I started drinking these drinks lately. Almost instantly the leg pain hit me. I’m limping and in pain. All I drink is water so I figured for a change I tried these. Its just not worth it.
What kind of leg pain? “Charley horse” pain.? I get them alot, now that I’ve been drinking “ice”. I’m wondering about the affect it may have on my sugar. I think it’s elevating it. I’m a diabetic.
Oh my gosh, started drinking this to help with my diet about 3 weeks ago, last week woke up with stomach cramps and horrible diarrhea, took some Imodium and it went away. Next morning, same thing! I didn’t connect it to the drink so kept drinking it, fast forward to this morning when I have been running to the bathroom all morning! No more of this crap for me, nothing else in my diet has changed aside from this so it has to be this drink. From now on I’ll just drink plain water!
Everybody’s bodies are different on how they process. just because someone has a side effect from these drinks doesn’t mean everybody will. I have been drinking 1 and day for about a year no problems. I love the Orange Mango.
Side effects are not the point. The point is: Why to make yourself get used to drinking/eating artificial drinks and foods that may not even be nutritious and pay hard-earned money for it?
me too
I have drank a few of these through out the spring, but when summer hit, I increased to 3-4 a day. They are so cool and refreshing. A few weeks back I started having stomach cramps, felt like menstrual cramps did years ago. Odd headaches, a little dizzy and nauseated at times. Then my bowel movements changed – and not for the good. I really appreciate this article and plan now today to cut way back and/or stop and see if that is the root to my problems. If not, guess it is off to the doctor for a colon test….
I would just like to point out that while yes this drink does contain sucralose, so do a lot of foods that people eat every day. If you’ve found this article while trying to research if this drink is healthy or not, don’t let this scare you away from ever trying it. Unless you’ve had a history of being sensitive to or having complications with foods containing artificial sweeteners, you’ll probably be fine. While this drink doesn’t have many health “benefits” (such as minerals and vitamins), neither does regular drinking water. The majority of our minerals and vitamins come from food and other beverages. I just thought I would make that point. I’ve been drinking these drinks on a daily basis for almost a year and a half and I haven’t had any pains or complications, so just remember that how you react to certain things really does depend on your own body because everyone is different.
has it helped you lose weight because of the green tea extract?
Yup I have been drinking between 2-3 of these Sparkling Ice drinks (about every flavor).. Major Diarrhea and bloating. Very bad for you. I didnt know the drinks contained sucrose. I am thrilled to know DyeDiet is a chemist. He/she is right, these drinks are fn horrible. I took quite a few chemistry classes myself and knew sucrose was bad but I didnt pay attention to the label on the sparkling ice’s bottle apparently. Thank you so much for this information.
Let me see……I am now 63 and for all the years I have talked about how bad artificial sweeteners are, I see people drink them daily. I have an older brother who has been drinking them since they first came out.
Of course, he is very overweight and doesn’t really care about that anymore, as he has been overweight
all his Post Military life. He is 73 and probably expects to live another few years or so. My Mother died at 88 and she was one of the first users of the diet candy Ayds. She also drank diet sodas. My sister is 69 and she has been on and off diets for a very long time. I don’t remember her ever not drinking a diet soda daily of some kind and now of course she is a diabetic. Of course, we all know what effects these artificial sugars have on your metabolism. Most people who are overweight are there for a reason. They ate too much when they were younger and probably binge eat, or they have a medical problem, and they don’t exercise. All the diet sodas in the world are not going to make you lose weight, but 8 glasses of water will. Check out every diet that comes out. You usually are told to ensure you drink those 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. Anyway, my main point here was to say to Sean, It’s like the Big Word after Green Tea Extract, Sucrolose. I don’t read every label either, but before I even would drink a flavored water, I always read to see what kind of sweetener it may have in it. Anyway , the best of luck to everyone. There are other more natural sweeteners out there, but guess what…..they somehow will have a side effect, Milk has side effects, Drink the Chlorinated water from the faucet, I am sure it has less side effects than Sparkling Ice and GOD only knows what it in the water we drink today. Oh, yeah for all of you Bottled Water drinkers, check out how they fill the bottles sometimes, straight from the tap. Then you have the filter at home water drinkers, check out the adverse effects that the filters may have on your body. Also, please go find something out there that doesn’t have any extra Vitamins or chemicals of some sort added these days to it and GOD BLESS YOU ALL. I will leave you with these famous words: “They have discovered something else that causes cancer……SALIVA, but only if swallowed in small amounts for a long period of time.” George Carlin
Oh and Thank You DyeDiet, You really have a great page here and you really are doing a great job at getting awareness of these chemicals out there. I still can’t stand the after taste of any of these Sweeteners, even the natural leaf sweetener I bought from South America, Stevia. Keep up the great work and research.
Thank you for sharing your story. Eating natural stuff is always safer than trying novelties synthesized in chemical labs for profit.
I meant sucralose not sucrose. Sucralose is horrible.
I am writing a paper about this brand of sparkling water and I am curious as to how much sucralose is in each serving or in each container of water?
Thank you!
Susan – not much… My guess would be: some 25 g/500 ~ 0.05 g that is ~ 50 mg per serving based on 1) that they commonly put 20-25 g of sugar for one serving of a soft drink and 2) that sucralose is 320 to 1000 times sweeter that table sugar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sucralose ). Good luck!
I’ve been drinking these daily for about a week because i hate water and im tired of being fat and so far I’ve been fine. No headaches or cramps or diarrhea. If it helps me lose weight and I’m not having symptoms, I’m going to keep drinking it. It has lots of b vitamins and green tea extract as well. Plus I’m pretty sure this is safer than those diet pills they sell in pharmacies. By the way, aspartame is bad for you too.
Thank you for your comment.
I picked up one of these a year or two back. It tasted amazing! No longer then two minutes after my first sip, I had some pretty painful stomache cramps. I wrote it off as something I ate earlier. I kept drinking them and surly enough the pains followed. They were just something I would drink maybe every couple of months. It never dawned on me that it was the drinks. Today I picked up one and gave it a try. As soon as the first pain hit I stopped, googled “Sparkling ice drink and stomach cramps” which led me to this site. I read the page and poured it out. Knowing this was the cause, made me not want to drink it anymore. In honesty, if it didn’t give me pains or problems I would still be drinking it. Now I will be avoiding these and the type of sugars it contains.
Thank you for your story.
I recently tried this Sparkling Water, but after drinking it I didn’t feel so Sparkling. I noticed my hands swelled up real bad and I had a migraine so bad I had to cancel all plans for the day. I had only drank one bottle so I wasn’t sure this was the cause of my ailment. I decided to try it again a few weeks later and unfortunately I had the exact same results again after drinking one bottle. I had to tell my family we will never buy this water again.
Dee, thank you for sharing.
I started drinking these about 2 months ago after I was givin a taste of one at work and I absolutely love them and have had no ill reactions of any kind. I was a soda drinker until just 6 months ago when I started a low carb diet so after drinking nothing but plain lemon water for 4 months these Sparkling Ice were a Gods send..
Thanks for the comments. When trying something new I always research it. This is the first time I tried the drink. I read so many bad comment about the drink I poured my out. I don’t want to be sick and I have 9 bottles left I an returning back to the local grocery store.
Thank for the insight!
Tell me how this drink can be better than a diet soda? They are equally bad. I will not knowingly put any artificial sweetener in my body. I’d rather occasionally drink a regular soda..at least it’s real sugar and not chemicals and I have to be accountable for the calories. Plus the sweet taste of these artificially sweetened drinks is horrific.
Agreed…
drunk mainly this for 1.2 years, a year break, and then again for 2 years or so straight.
Have not had any of the adverse short term effects as described above.
I’ve noticed the older you are the more effects these have on you. For example; someone in their 60s has had diarrhea or nausea, whereas someone in their 20s has had little to no effect.
I wonder if drinking these has to do with your health prior to drinking them?
